Susan Morris has been an employee at St. Luke’s Magic Valley Medical Center since 1979, and currently holds the position of Patient Safety Officer.

Susan is known throughout the profession as someone possessing deep passion, ongoing dedication, and progressive insight. Susan’s expertise improves the level of services and care for all patients she encounters.

In 2005, Susan was named the Member of the Year by the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science — Idaho (ASCLS-ID).

Currently, Susan serves as the President of the National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel (NCA) and brings creativity, foresight, and enthusiasm to the table. With each presentation, publication, speech, or meeting, Susan demonstrates her deep desire to ensure that NCA will continue to serve the best interests and needs of clinical laboratory professionals. Under her leadership, the Board is committed to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and excellence, which have been NCA’s guiding principles since inception.

Denise Anamani graduated from Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, CT with a Master’s degree in Biology. She is presently a lecturer in the Diagnostic Genetic Sciences program at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, CT. She received the Certified Laboratory Specialist in Molecular Biology (CLSpMB) credential from NCA in 1997 and the ASCP Technologist in Immunology I (ASCP) certificate in 1991.

Ms. Anamani has been on the NCA Board of Directors as a representative to AGT for four years. She also sits on the examination committee, molecular subdivision. Ms. Anamani is a member and active participant in the Association of Genetic Technologists and the Association for Molecular Pathology. Prior to teaching both lecture and laboratory courses at the University of Connecticut, Ms. Anamani worked as a laboratory technologist for 15 years in molecular pathology, immunology and chemistry. She is very proud to be part of this organization and is committed to furthering the goals of NCA.

Cindy JohnsonSecretary / Treasurer — Cindy Johnson, CLS

Cindy Johnson earned her B.A. degree in Medical Technology from the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota. She earned her M.S. degree in Clinical Laboratory Science from the University Of North Dakota in Grand Forks and has been in the laboratory profession for over 25 years. For the past nine years, Cindy has served as the Director of Laboratory Operations for CentraCare Laboratory Services in St. Cloud, MN.

Cindy’s laboratory professional activities include her current post as secretary/treasurer for the National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel Inc., membership in the Joint Commission Laboratory Advisory Council and a member of the Washington G2 Reports Advisory Board. She is also active in the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS) and has held various leadership positions including two terms as ASCLS-Minnesota state president.

Cheryl BurnsExamination Council Chair — Cheryl Burns, MS, CLS, (NCA)

Cheryl Burns is brings an invigorating passion towards the clinical laboratory science profession to the NCA organization. She credits her love for her career and her dedication to the profession to several important mentors in her life. Cheryl’s talents are diverse but she considers herself first and foremost a clinical laboratory scientist.

As a part of the NCA family, she was initially certified by NCA in 1980. She now serves as Director of the Undergraduate Program in Clinical Laboratory Sciences and as an associate professor in the Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, TX.

Cheryl’s hard work and dedication are evident within the long list of accomplishments, awards, and talents that she now possesses. Among these are her 2006 UTHSCSA Presidential Award for Teaching Excellence; induction into Alpha Mu Tau Fraternity (honorary fraternity of American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science) in 2000; 1999 ASCLS Kendall Award for Professional Achievement in Hematology; 1996 San Antonio Women's Hall of Fame – Science.

Currently, Cheryl serves as the chair of the NCA Examination Council. In this role, she oversees the restructuring of the exam council and maintains oversight of individual exam committees for phlebotomy, molecular biology, cytogenetics, laboratory management, and CLT/CLS in the development of certification exam forms for each exam cycle and review of exam statistics to assure integrity of each certification exam. Cheryl has also given numerous presentations at local, state, and national area of hematology and clinical laboratory education.

Susan J. BeckASCLS Representative — Susan J. Beck, CLS(I)
(7/2007 - 6/2010) — 1st term

Dr. Susan Beck has been actively involved in NCA for many years starting as an item writer in 1980 and then serving as the chair of the Immunohematology section of the exam for 5 years. She was the chair of the Examination Council for 4 years and in 1995, she was appointed to the NCA Board of Directors as a representative from the American Society of Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS). She served as the President of NCA from 1997-2000. She returned to the NCA Board of Directors in 2007.

Dr. Beck’s commitment to NCA is largely due to the influence of her mentors, Dr. Karen Karni and Dr. Brenta Davis, who are both past presidents of ASCLS and retired CLS program directors. In publications and presentations, Drs. Karni and Davis emphasized that, in a true profession, members of that profession determine who is qualified to enter the profession. NCA is the certification agency in which members of the laboratory profession control this important gateway to the profession.

AGT Representative — Amy Groszbach, BS, MLT (ASCP), CLSp(MB)

Amy graduated from the Mayo School of Health Sciences and Rochester Community College with a Medical Laboratory Technician degree in 1988. In 1993, she graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Biochemistry. She came to the Molecular Genetics Laboratory in 1993 where she worked as a clinical technologist for five years and a development technologist for one year prior to her appointment as Education Specialist II. I am a NCA Certified Laboratory Specialist in Molecular Biology where I review and write exam questions for the CLSp(MB) exam.

Her interests in the Molecular Genetics Laboratory are found within her involvement with many training programs. She teaches and trains Clinical Laboratory Science students, Diagnostic Genetics students, Molecular Pathology students, and Fellows/Residents from any of the eight Fellowship programs. She also trains new clinical technologists in the 14-week training program. Amy is director of a molecular diagnostics course. She is completing her Master of Education degree in Adult Education from the University of Minnesota.

She enjoys the challenges of creating and coordinating these programs while developing a rapport with these individuals and finally having the opportunity to share her knowledge with them.

Lynn R. IngramASCLS Representative at Large — Lynn R. Ingram, CLS

Lynn Ingram graduated from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center Program in Medical Technology in 1973 and received her MS in Health Care Administration and Education from the University of Memphis in 1985. She began her professional career as a generalist at a reference laboratory but soon turned her attentions to teaching. After teaching in a Certified Laboratory Assistant Program for six years, she came back to her alma mater in 1982 when she joined the faculty at UTHSC, teaching Clinical Chemistry. During her years at UT, she became known as the “Liver Lady” reflecting her interest in liver functions and diseases. She has traveled the country trying to spread her enthusiasm for the liver.

Retired from her teaching job since 2006, she refuses to retire from her profession and continues to serve in various ways. Active in the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science since the early 1990’s, she served on the ASCLS Board of Directors for six years and is currently serving as the Director of the ASCLS Leadership Academy. Promoting professionalism and leadership skills for laboratory professionals continues to be a passion.

Mona Gleysteen is a Clinical Laboratory Technician educator at Lake Area Technical Institute in Watertown, SD. Her passion is her love of science and teaching. She knows how to play the bagpipes, solve puzzles and press on, even when quitting seems easier.

Dr. Park received both his undergraduate and graduate education at Dartmouth College where he received a Doctorate in Biological Sciences in 1995. He received his NCA certification in cytogenetics in 1985 and has been employed at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center since 1978. For 25 years, Dr. Park supervised cytogenetics at DHMC and he now holds the position of Manager of Clinical Pathology.

Dr. Park is a past president of the Association of Genetic Technologists (AGT) and past member of the CAP/ACMG Cytogenetics Resource Committee. He first became an NCA director in 1987.

In 2004, Dr. Park was recognized with the AGT Outstanding Achievement Award and was cited for his contributions as founding member of the Foundation for Genetic Technology, AGT representative to the Committee of Medical Genetic Organizations, Director and Executive Committee Member of the NCA (1987 to 1996), member of the AGT Technical Manual task force, member of the Association Journal’s editorial review board (1990 to present), and chair of the National Certification Agency (NCA) committee on Molecular Genetic eligibility. During Dr. Park’s term as AGT president, the then Association of Cytogenetic Technologists expanded its scope to reflect emerging technologies in genetics, thereby becoming the AGT. During that term, Dr. Park also presided over the inclusion of AGT as a liaison to the College of American Pathologists/American College of Medical Genetics Cytogenetics Resource Committee, and he served as AGT’s founding representative to that committee from 1997 to 2003.

Susan has more than 19 years of experience in marketing communications, business management and media relations. Building on an academic foundation of bioscience, technology and clinical genetics, she has developed core business development, funding, internal organization and marketing communications programs for an extensive list of public and privately-held technology companies. A member of the National Investor Relations Institute (NIRI), Susan has contributed significantly to the development of positioning, messaging and public market (media, analyst and investor) communications programs including day-to-day market and media communications, client representation to the industry media and analyst markets, materials development and distribution, public relations, media, and roadshow messaging, presentation development and training, crisis communications and issues management.

A former business editor and columnist with The Arizona Republic and Adweek and a nationally recognized expert in marketing techniques and communications, Susan has published more than 500 articles on these subjects in the past 15 years. Susan was a co-founder and Executive Vice President/Marketing of Oncogenetics, Inc., the nation's first multidisciplinary cancer genetics laboratory. The venture-capitalized clinical laboratory specialized in esoteric diagnostics, achieving annualized revenues of $4.6 million in less than 24 months with a staff of 62. The company was sold to Impath, Inc. in 1996.

Sheila O’Neal earned her B.A. degree in English from the University of Missouri, Columbia. Ms. O’Neal has been in the non profit association management profession over 15 years working with trade associations and professional societies. Her career has spanned all aspects of association management including meeting/conference planning, event planning, legislative activities, membership, marketing and communication strategies, board and volunteer management, strategic planning and implementation as well as overall account management. She has specialized in working with credentialing agencies for the past 8 years, where she has served in the Executive Director position. Ms. O’Neal began working with NCA in 2000.

Ms. O’Neal’s professional activities include membership with the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) and the Kansas City Society Association Executives.
